Wednesday Night Waltz
Fiddle Level Four
Wednesday Night Waltz — After Mississippi fiddle band the Leake County Revelers (with fiddler Wil Gilmer) scored a major hit with “Wednesday Night Waltz” in both 1927 and 1928 for Columbia Records, West Virginian Clark Kessinger’s record label, Brunswick, instructed him to release his own version in 1928, and Kessinger’s version became an even more substantial recording given Kessinger’s virtuosic performance which helped to establish a new technical standard for old-time fiddling. I grew up hearing this standard all around the fiddle world, and it is a contest staple.
